citify me

Recently during breakfast, when P. asked the girls what they wanted to do for the day, Cinderella responded, “Go to the art museum.” Her sisters agreed.

They visit museums regularly because of our easy access, but the art museum is one they do not frequent. However, off to the art museum they went—by way of a city bus.

At the museum, they spent most of their time looking at the modern art, finding its bright colors, big canvases, and broad strokes extremely appealing. An unfortunate wrong turn into a medieval or renaissance room (yikes!) apparently raised a lot of questions about religion. P. answered the questions the best he could, and while the girls were still curious about some of it when they got home, the discussion was easily diverted to some actual “scribbles” they had seen.

The four decided to walk most of the long way back home, passing by skyscrapers and bustling outdoor cafes, stopping for a short time to draw pictures at a recently renovated 19th century fountain.

To me, this pretty much seems like a perfect day for three four-and-three-quarters year olds. And, to be able to have it on the spur of the moment, what could be better?

When I think about what a day like this means for such young girls, I wonder what aspects of it will imprint on them, even if they don’t remember it in the end. If mega-corporations count on “brand imprintation for later actuation” (those words from Morgan Spurlock in Supersize Me are certainly “imprinted” in my brain!), can’t the same thing happen with a museum experience or bus trip?
